I'm keeping a blind eye to the mess on the other side (and this here is after a clean-up!). It spreads all over the floor and when I get tired of hopping over it we will clean it up. As much as she loves crafting, I'm happy that Indi is willing to trash the "crafts" she is done with. Some things she keeps for quite long. (Sometimes I clean by myself though and put stuff in a temporary holding spot before the final destination...)
And as unsightly as her craft is, it sure is simple too: she just pulls out empty cardboard containers from the recycling and glues and tapes and draws a bit. I don't have to worry about her "wasting" precious craft supplies, or keeping her handiworks forever.
I can let her go to town with it.
And she does.

Your Indi is a very different proposal than my grandson, but he too is keen on cardboard - I think all kids are. He likes to grab some cardboard and wrestle with it, tear it or chop it up (or stick it all together!), releasing some of his very testosterone-fueled tendencies!! (He was born like this, his sister is so different you wouldn't think they could be related!!!).
We once watched the neighbourhood kids play with a large cardboard box for 3 weeks solid, and every day it was something different. In the end it pretty much disintegrated when a bunch of them slid it down the hill as some kind of vehicle, shrieking at the top of their voices and having a whale of a time! It's the simple things... :)
I try not to feel guilt when I recycle my daughters junk models after a little while, I think the fun is in the actual process of junk modelling and it doesn't matter if the finished object is kept forever or not. Well, that's what I hope anyway! We don't have room for storing finished models for long periods of time, so they either fall apart or go on a quiet journey to the recycling bin...

PS I see that you have removed all your archive - is it accessible anywhere? I enjoyed referring back to some of your posts on occasion and rereading some of your thoughts!

The craft space is a happy space! It provides an environment where young ones learn to create their own possibilities with found objects - to learn how to enjoy what we already have in new ways. A well exercised and strong imagination can open the heaviest doors - in one's mind and in the tangible world.
Hi Vappu, just wondering if you plan to put any of your archives up on the blog again? I miss them! I find your blog has a wonderful authenticity about it and it makes your search for the simple life very inspiring. Perhaps you could put some of them back up minus the photos of Indiana, if that was your concern? (I think I read that in one of your comments). Anyway, just want to let you know your blog was much appreciated!
